Links of the Week (Week #45 - 52)
Welcome to the last links of the week of 2006... scratch that... welcome to the last links of the week ever! That's right... in 2007 you will not see a single "link of the week" entry at Hypercubed Blog. Why? Well, mainly guilt. With a title like links of the week you would think I would post links every week. We'll if you look back at the last several months you can see I didn't do so well. I know what you are asking... what am I going to do without Hypercubed's posts of interesting links from around the web. Well, you could go directly to Digg yourself. Most of my links come from there anyway. Or you can settle for my inconsistent and indeterminate intervals link dumps in 2007. Sure it will walk like links of the week and talk like links of the week but the name link dump is more fitting and less guilt ridden.
Now for 7 weeks of links. Hardly worth the wait if you ask me.
- An Other Cup - If you liked Cat Stevens perhaps you will like Yusuf Islam. In case you didn't know Cat Stevens formally converted to the Islamic faith in 1977 and legally changed his name to Yusuf Islam. After 2 decades he has returned to the studio to record a new album. I haven't bought a copy myself but he still sounds good.
- Askville - Question and answer system from Amazon. Ask or answer questions to earn Quest Coins that are not redeemable for anything. Perhaps in 2007 according to the FAQ. [via http://www.techcrunch.com/]
- best of craigslist : To the women who work in my office... I hate you - Some guy posts a message on Craig's list to all the women in his office... that he vehemently hates. [via http://digg.com/]
- Can This Fruit Be Saved? - Popular Science - The Banana apocalypse is near! [via http://digg.com/]
- Check from a scammer bounces victim into jail - This is pretty scary. This guy went to the bank to cash a check for two bikes sold on craigslist. He was arrested on the spot for attempting to cash a bad check. He was a victim not the criminal. [via http://www.boingboing.net/]
- Data Generator - Ever need a list of realistic looking names, phone numbers, and email addresses to test your application. Well here you go. [via http://digg.com/]

- Do humans have a compass in their nose? | The Register - I always wondered if this was true. [via http://digg.com/]
- Don't Sit Up Straight, It's Bad For Your Back - I find it very difficult to sit up straight. If I try it for a few hours my back begins to hurt. I'm a firm believer in slouching. [via http://digg.com/]
- Download details: IE6 App Compat Test Image - There is no question about it. IE7 makes a web developers life much easier. With increased standardization most things that work in Firefox now look fine in IE7 also. Unfortunately still ~50% of users still use 1E6 (as of November). If you need to test your applications in IE6 probably the easiest way is to install IE6 on a virtual machine. Because of the way Microsoft licensing works you would need to have an individual licence for the windows installed on that virtual machine. That is unless you use the free IE6 App Comparability VPC image from MS. This virtual machine is a preinstalled Windows XP SP2 Microsoft Virtual PC (also free from MS) image with IE6 (and pretty much nothing else) and doesn't need it's own licence. The only catch is this XP installation expires in April 2007.
- Duct Tape On A MuthaFcukin' Plane! at Turbanhead.com - Would you fly on a plane after witnessing a duck tape repair job on the wing? I don't think I would. [via http://digg.com/]
- FT.com / Companies / Media & internet - Wikipedia founder plans rival - The great thing about Wikipedia is that anyone can contribute to it. The bad thing about Wikipedia is that ANYONE can add to it. The other day one of me co-worker said to me "You have added to Wikipedia! Then I don't trust it." It's a catch 22. You want a democratic open system but need to somehow weed out the idiots (sounds like politics). Well, a Wikipedia founder thinks he can come up with a solution called Citizendium. Basically a moderated Wikipedia with subject matter experts that can control a topic. I'm skeptical that the may not bee able to keep up with submissions. But let's hope. - geoGreeting! - Type with buildings. [via http://www.lifehacker.com/]
- Google Earth in 4D - Have I mentioned that I love Google Earth? Well, if you don't yet love Google earth wait tell you see historical map overlays. Very awesome... especially with transparency. Turn up the transparency on the map overlay and see how the features have changed. [via http://digg.com/]
- Healthbolt - What Happens To Your Body If You Drink A Coke Right Now? - I stopped drinking soda cold turkey last year. It gets hard in the summer but overall it is worth it. There is so much badness in soda not the least of which is the enormous amount of sugar in each bottle. According to this site the only reason you don't vomit from all the sugar is "because phosphoric acid cuts the flavor allowing you to keep it down". [via http://digg.com/]
- Human Computation - Google Video - A (very long) presentation by a Google employee on the power of human computation. If your interested in CS check it out... if not avoid at all costs. [via http://www.lifehacker.com/]
- Immigration_by_the_Numbers.mov - Google Video - Interesting lecture on immigration problems in the US. [via Friend Steve]

- onegoodmove: Faithheads on the March [via http://digg.com/]
- Putfile - Verizon Bad Math - According to Verizon 0.002 cents is the same as 0.002 dollars. If you are going to deal with money don't you think you should understand basic math. Actually you don't need math. You need to understand that 0.002 apples is not the same as 0.002 oranges. [via http://digg.com/]
- The Gender Genie - According to this site I write like a girl. [via http://digg.com/]

- TRAFFIC WAVE EXPERIMENTS - Often traffic congestion is caused by an obstruction like a traffic accident, debris in the road, or a nude woman on the side of the road. The congestion can last for a long time even after the original obstruction has been cleared. Changing your driving habits in stop-and-go traffic not only can reduce stress but speed up traffic after the obstruction has passed. [via http://digg.com/]
- YouTube - A pool filled with non-newtonian fluid - Everyone loves Newtonian fluid. [via http://digg.com/]
- YouTube - Computer Repair Fraud - The other day at a major computer retail store I noticed a woman was at the service center picking up a PC. I noticed this because it was the same PC that I owned in the late 90's. Standing in ear shot not intentionally easy dropping (ok maybe a little) I became aware that she had extra memory installed in the machine. If I recall correctly that machine needed PC100 memory and must be installed in matching pairs. Let's say she put in two 256 MB chips. I'm sure the store did not sell her generics so this cost probably $40 each for each 256 MB chip. The service charge for that place is $100 min. So this poor woman paid ~$180 to maintain a nearly 10 year old machine. You can buy a new barebones kit from tigerdirect for $219. What a ripoff. Please people don't let your grandparents get their own PC's repaired. [via http://digg.com/]
- YouTube - Exclusive Kevin Federline Interview In the eloquent words of KFed... "She's like you know... she really believes in it.. bigtime... like she sees... you know... that... I mean together we take over the world." Oh, and by the way KFed... she want's a divorce. [via http://digg.com/]
- YouTube - Mr.マリック 空中浮揚の種明かし - Magicians tricks reveled. I always wondered about the floating woman trick. [via http://digg.com/]
- YouTube - nintendo superfan - This Wii fan is insanely whacked. I think I actually know this guy from someplace. Anyone know where he is from? [via http://digg.com/]
